Do I need any prior experience?
No, if you study hard and prepare well for tryouts, you have a great chance of being selected. Tryout resources will be provided as well! In addition, our seminar group leaders will help you prepare for your events and competitions throughout the year. Everyone is encouraged to apply!
How much of a time commitment is required?
The time commitment is based on how much you're willing to put in: the more effort you put into your events, the better you'll do at competitions. On average, the time commitment is around 3-4 hours per week for the first few months, but may increase as competition dates get closer.
How do I join the team?
We'll send out a form that will ask you questions about your interests and what events you want to compete in. After that, we'll have tryouts for around two weeks and decide teams based on results.
What if I don't make the team?
This'll be new this year: everyone, even people who aren't team members, can attend our seminar meetings and learn science with us! We'd encourage you to stay dedicated and maybe even try out the next year :)
How many teams does our school have?
Our school in past years has had 3-4 teams. We usually choose how many teams based how many people apply.
How many participants per team?
There are 15 participants per team, and we may have 2-3 alternates for each team because people often have schedule conflicts for competitions.
How many events do I get?
Generally, you'll get 3 events, but you might get one more depending on each team's assignments.
How many people participate in each event together?
Each event will have 2-3 people working together!
Do I get to choose my events?
During the application we will ask for your preferred events. We will try to give you at least one event you like, but you may not get all your requested events because of schedule overlaps at competitions.
Where and when is the competition?
Invitationals are usually held in different cities and during early second semester. Many of them, like the Golden Gate invitational, are held and organized by prestigious universities such as Stanford or UC Berkeley. The Bay Area regionals competition has been held at Cal State East Bay for the past couple of years, and it generally takes place on the last Saturday of February or the first Saturday of March.
